Whatcom County
Farm fields, sloughs and hedgerows around North and South Red River Road west of Ferndale, mostly on the Lummi Reservation. One of Whatcom County's best areas for wintering hawks and owls, with swans in the fields, shorebirds on flooded ground during migration, and wrens and chickadees in the hedgerows all year.
Harriers and rough-legged hawks hunt the fields from late fall through winter. Your car makes a good blind, so stay inside when a bird is close.
