Beaver ponds, marsh and streamside woods on the back side of Blanchard Mountain, along Barrell Springs Road and the Blanchard Hill forest roads near Alger. Quiet ponds hold wood ducks, hooded mergansers and other waterfowl, with forest and streamside birds all around.
Calm mornings give reflections on the ponds. Wood ducks and mergansers are wary, so settle in behind cover before they swim out.
